Direct Action Tent
Presentations will run from noon-2 pm and will be repeated from 3-5 pm.
Talk Back - Verbal Nonviolent Direct Action - Bonnie Tinker and Rev. Cecil Prescod of Love Makes a Family will show you how to stay centered in nonviolence while engaging in very difficult dialogue, that transforms the conversation and makes change possible.
Walk the Talk - Three local activists with years of experience will run two nonviolence training exercises: The Hassle Line and The Barometer. Come role-play with them and get a taste of what nonviolence training is all about.
Losing Your Arrest Virginity - Linda Wiener & the SPOGS, all members of Portland's Surge Protection Brigade, will demystify the arrest experience and talk about what it's really like to be handcuffed, taken off in a police wagon, searched and put in jail. Find out how to get involved with SPB, Portland's most creative (and most fun!) direct action group.
School of the Americas - A Personal Story of Civil Resistance - Ann Huntwork, long-time Portland activist, will tell the moving story of how three children from Guatemala, Iraq and Afghanistan played a part in her decision to "cross the line" at the School of the Americas, an act for which she served 6 months in federal prison.
Legal Issues in Civil Disobedience Actions - Did you ever contemplate joining a civil resistance action, but back off because you didn't know the legal consequences? Here is your opportunity to find out. Stu Sugarman, Portland attorney for many local activists, will give an overview of what you can expect and answer your questions.
De-Fund the War Campaign - Peter Bergel, Executive Director, Oregon Peace Works. Come hear about a campaign that is part of the national Occupation Project. Activists are demanding that Senator Smith back up his words with action by pledging to stop funding this war. Learn how you can participate in the ongoing sit-ins that have beseiged Senator Smith's office since January of this year.

Come be inspired to Stand Up! Sit-In! and Act Out! Watch a 10-minute video compilation of recent Portland actions that will be playing throughout the afternoon. (You may even see some of your friends in action!).
Find out where and how to get active - Come view a weekly calendar of all the vigils, protests and actions happening around Portland/Vancouver and how to contact organizers in your area. Or, take a list home with you. Sign-up for upcoming events and trainings. Talk to members of CodePINK, the Surge Protection Brigade and De-Fund the War and take some of their literature. See photos of their actions. Pick up information about nonviolence and direct action.
