March & Rally in Salem On the Steps of the Capitol

March 15, 2009 1:00 PM

Stop the Wars at Home and Abroad:

Keep Oregon's Guard Home from Iraq and Afghanistan

Join your fellow PDX Peace members in Salem next Sunday for the state-wide march. Gather at the PDX Peace bannerat the literature tent in front of the Capitol building at 1:00pm to march as a PDX Peace contingent. For more info or to join the contingent, email maldelamer@gmail.com

--   Money for jobs, education, healthcare and housing, not war!

--    End the Siege of Gaza!  A Just Peace for Palestine-Israel!

--    Say NO to Scapegoating!  Protect Immigrant Rights!

Our country needs a renewed and vigorous commitment to human rights, implementing UN resolutions treating rape as a war crime and supportingwomen as peace-builders. Never again the scourge of torture. Never again the secret prisons and renditions, the knock on the door in the dead of
night. Those responsible for the crimes must be brought to justice. And the Oregon Guard must stay in Oregon!

As our country and our world slide deeper into recession, half of the Oregon Guard have been ordered to Iraq in an immoral war that Oregonians oppose. The Oregon Guard's place is at home, providing service forcommunities threatened by natural disasters.

Buses will be going down from Portland!

Portland area peace and justice activists invite you to RSVP your round-trip bus extravaganza to the Sunday, March 15, Salem rally!
The cost of a round-trip bus ride will only be $10.00! Less if you can't afford 10 bucks, or more if you are feeling generous and want to kick in for someone suffering a deficit. A few absolutely free scholarships will be offered; let us know if you are requesting one and we'll put you on a list first come, first served.

We'll board the bus at 11 am on March 15th, location TBA.  Once in Salem, we will be joining with peace & justice enthusiasts from around the state. The event will include speakers and music, followed by a short march around the capitol mall to bring the attention of our lawmakers to the issues which concern us:

Please book your bus ride at:
fangsandclaws@q.com with "RSVP" on the subject line, no later than March 8th, please.

Tell us your name, email address, phone, how many seats you'll want and how much you are planning to pay.  We will email (or phone) back with the location to meet the bus and will collect for your fare as you board the bus.

Bring your civic-minded spirit and a sack lunch and join us for this fun and meaningful day!

March 19th, the 6th Anniversary of the Iraq War

PSU Smith Center, Rm. 338

7:15pm-9:00pm

In the last eight years the list of horrors as a result of the latest U.S. intervention in the Middle East & Central Asia has led to outrage across the world. Obama received millions of votes from people who saw him as the anti-war candidate, yet he plans to leave 50,000 soldiers in Iraq through at least 2011, deploy an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan, and continue funneling billions of dollars into Israel in support of the war against Hamas and ongoing occupation of Palestine.

BUT THERE'S HOPE! Obama also inspired people around the world to fight for real change. Yes, we CAN build an anti-war movement that can challenge all three of these occupations and demand reparations. We CAN insist that the trillions of dollars spent on war be redirected to meet human needs. Join the International Socialist Organization and other activists as we discuss the occupations and strategize for the struggle ahead!

Celebrate Friday night with the Dances of Universal Peace. These energy and consciousness raising circle dances, formerly known as Sufi Dancing, blend folk-style dancing with words and themes from the world's religions.  They are a way to joyfully experience the innate heart-connection with each other and with The One, the Spirit that moves through all.

Each dance is fully taught, very EASY to learn, and guided. So fear not! First-timers are welcome and greatly encouraged to participate. In fact, each dance is taught as if the group has never danced before. Children who can follow instructions and maintain a sacred atmosphere are also welcome.

We meet every Friday at the Acadia Ballroom building (1829 NE Alberta St, Portland OR) at 7:30pm Contact Jack: 503-954-2942. $5.00 donation requested.

You can dance once a week or once a year, it doesn’t matter. Just bring your smile, the light in your eyes, and a desire to have fun!

Thank you!

Jack

+++   Additional Information +++++ As in these timeless mystic traditions, the Dances use simple music, lyrics, and movements to touch the spiritual essence within ourselves and others. No musical or dance experience of any kind is required and everyone is welcomed to join in. Participation, not presentation, is the focus. No special attire is required, although comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is best. Participants join hands forming a circle with the Dance leader and other musicians in the center. Throughout the evening, the leader teaches the group the words, melody, and movements for the next Dance and often provides some background history about that particular Dance. The teaching is always done from a compassionate heart in a comfortable, quiet, and often sacred setting.

The movements and songs drawn from over 400 Dances include themes of peace (both inner and outer), healing (the Earth, individuals, and the global family), and the celebration of life's great mystery. Dancers focus on peace and harmony creating a sense of solidarity and community while celebrating the underlying unity of all the spiritual traditions of the Earth. By experiencing these many traditions, a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures, as well as one's own heritage, is gained.

When Dance lyrics include sacred phrases in their own native languages, special attention is given to insure that all have ample opportunity to pronounce the foreign words comfortably and correctly. Leaders usually make a point to have the group first speak and then sing the unfamiliar words. Most Dances are only four lines long and repeated many times, so learning is usually quick and easy - within ten minutes people are moving, singing, and sharing together.

The mood of the Dances is infinitely variable, evoking feelings of love, joy, and compassion. Whether invoking the compassion of the Buddhist Qwan Yin, celebrating the playful energy of Krishna, or experiencing the related emotion of any other spiritual figure, dancers take part in a dynamic relationship between the group, individuals, and the self.

Conference Call Briefing on Afghanistan with TOM HAYDEN

Join a call with Tom Hayden, one of the antiwar movement's leading analysts for a one-hour discussion on the escalation of the war and occupation of Afghanistan. See below for details on how to sign-up.

Last week, Tom wrote an article, "Don't Go There Mr. President!" He said, "It's time for a new movement against reckless escalation, especially one that threatens to divert our attention from the crisis at home, while only leaving poverty, malnutrition, and anti-American hatreds rising abroad." He has also encouraged participation in UFPJ's national March on Wall Street saying, "The movement could begin this week, a living memorial to the passing of Dr. Martin Luther King on April 4, 1968." (And don't forget, PDX Peace is also having an event on April 4th here in Portland!)

This conference call briefing will not only help launch grassroots organizing, but will also be a fundraising event for UFPJ. We are asking each person who signs-up to make a donation of $10 -- although larger donations are certainly appreciated as well. Click here to be taken to UFPJ's Donation Page.

The conference call will take place on Thursday, April 2. It will begin at 9:00 PM ET (6:00 PM PDT) and will run for one hour.

Since there will be many people on the call, it will not be possible to open up to questions on the spur of the moment. Instead, we are inviting you to submit your questions in advance, and no later than Wednesday, April 1 at 12 noon ET. Submit your question by sending an email to organizing@unitedforpeace.org -- and you must include your name, city and state (and if you're part of a group -- the name of your group). We will sort through the questions submitted and choose five questions that reflect a cross-section of the issues people raise. We will then inform those people who have been selected so they can raise the questions during the call.

Before the call, we will send the call in number and code to everyone who has signed-up.

Take care,

Judith Le Blanc
UFPJ Organizing Coordinator

To sign up for the call:

1) Click here to be taken to UFPJ's Donation Page.

2) Fill out the form with your $10 (or more) donation (donations less than $10 will not be accepted for the call).

3) Under the tab 'Please Direct My Donation Towards...', select 'Tom Hayden Conference Call'. That will let us know the donation is for the call, not just a regular donation -- so this is very important for you to do!

Out of Iraq, Out of Afghanistan!

Money for People, not for War

The PDX Peace Coalition presents Change ≠ War, a public performance and education forum to take place on April 4th, 2009. We will gather to demand an immediate end to the war in Iraq, and join with brothers and sisters worldwide to call for the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan. The event will also commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech, which linked unjust social conditions with aggressive U.S. military policy.

It is up to the peace movement to remind the people of Oregon of the costs of war in Iraq, Afghanistan and here at home. To ensure that we bring the troops home now and give returning veterans the support they need.

The recent election and inauguration positively inspired huge numbers of people. Unfortunately, though, President Obama plans to send an additional 17,000 Americans to Afghanistan, and to extend the occupation of Iraq until at least 2011. Grassroots activists are called to offer an alternative vision that will alter this bloody course of action and create a climate for real change. Let’s show the world that Portland is up to the task!

National Day of Protest

Break up the Banks!
Stop Blank Check Bailouts

Saturday, April 11
2:00pm
Pioneer Courthouse Square

(rumor has it that Amy Goodman will join us here in Portland)

Join us this Saturday, April 11 for a national day of protest to break up the power of the banks that caused the current financial crisis and to push for systematic reform of the financial sector. In Portland, we will combine the call to -- nationalize, reorganize and decentralize -- with the Portland based Fire Your Bank campaign. This should be a great event that helps all of us get the message out to Congress and the President that we want solutions to the financial crisis that benefit all of us, not the Wall Street elites.

Bring your signs, chants, cell phones, and energy. And help get the word out and forward this email to your lists.

Some sign ideas include:

Banksters are gaming the system
Break Up the Banks
If it's too big to fail, it's too big to exist
Bailout the people
Trustbusters 2.0
Fire Your Bank
Stop Blank Check Bailouts

Three Key Reforms:
NATIONALIZE: Insolvent banks that are too big to fail must incur a FDIC intervention -- no more taxpayer handouts.
REORGANIZE: Current CEOs and board members must be removed and bonuses wiped out. The financial elite must share in the cost of what they have caused.
DECENTRALIZE: Banks must be broken up and sold back to the private market with new antitrust rules in place-- new banks managed by new people.
