PROTEST: Saturday January 10, 3pm at Pioneer Square

Our Palestinian brothers and sisters in Gaza need us to take to the streets and demand an end to the massacre.

This morning, we woke up to the news that the Israeli military has
slaughtered 30 and wounded 55 Palestinian civilians taking refuge at
the U.N. School. The bombardment from land, air and sea is continuing
and the death toll nears 600 Palestinian men, women and children and
over 2,500 wounded.

Come down to Pioneer Square this Saturday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m. and make your voices heard.

Bring your Palestinian Flags and Signs, and tell your Friends and Neighbors

Comparisons between Barack Obama's assumption of power and Franklin
Delano Roosevelt's in 1933 have been many and varied. None of this is
surprising. Roosevelt's New Deal is remembered today for signature
programs that seem very relevant in light of the economic disaster
spreading from Wall Street through the rest of the economy. The New
Deal is synonymous with Social Security; with the "alphabet soup"
agencies like the WPA (Works Progress Administration, which created
jobs for the unemployed constructing public buildings); and with the
government's recognition of the right of workers to join unions.

But
the New Deal didn't come about because of some hitherto hidden
enthusiasm among American political leaders for giving working people
new rights and programs. The New Deal was, first and foremost, a
program to save a U.S. economy in crisis. That American workers made
gains was the result of huge struggles that gave a radical content to
that program. Join the International Socialist Organization for a
discussion on this incredibly relevant period in U.S. history.

the work of the Poor People’s Campaign. This MLK Day will be on the eve

FREE PALESTINE! Activists Speak Out Against the Massacre in Gaza!

Thursday, January 29th, 7:15pm. PSU Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 101

Are you outraged at Israel's war path through Gaza?
Who wouldn't be at the senseless destruction, loss of innocent life,
the targeting of schools and mosques, the use of horrific chemical
weapons such as white phosphorus, the razing of not only homes but
whole neighborhoods and cities... It's an immeasurable catastrophe.

This
conflict raises questions of local, national, and international
significance. In order for our movement to be effective and to grow
wide and strong, we must come together to learn and exchange ideas.

VOZ Workers' Rights Education Project Presents:

From Corner To Center: Portland's Day Labor Art Show

6:30pm
Thursday February 5th, 2009
The Portland Day Labor Hire Site
240 NE MLK Jr. Blvd

www.portlandvoz.org

From Corner To Center is more than an art show: it is a window into
Portland's day labor community. Each morning, day laborers gather at
the hire site to organize and seek work. Join us as we transform the
walls of the hire site into the walls of a gallery. Complete with
photography, paintings, drawings and ceramics, this art show is
entirely made by the workers who come to the site. Pieces from the show
include candid portraits of life spent waiting for jobs, painted
cityscapes, and interpretations of dreams and cultural longing. Enjoy
music and dancing, and grab a cup of Mexican hot chocolate and
traditional sweet bread.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
We, having dutifully served our nation, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work, with others
(a) Toward increasing public awareness of the costs of war.
(b) To restrain our government from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations
(c) To end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons
(d) To seek justice for veterans and victims of war
(e) To abolish war as an instrument of national policy.
To achieve these goals, members of Veterans For Peace pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace.
We urge all people who share this vision to join us.

Mercy Corps and our Global Citizen Corps
initiative are excited to announce that the 2009-2010 Global Citizen
Corps Leadership program is now open
and accepting
applicants!

The Global Citizen Corps Leadership program is a
national network of high school student leaders who educate and mobilize their
schools and communities to fight global poverty. Every year, Mercy Corps selects
200 Leaders to gain the knowledge and skills to become effective anti-poverty
experts through in-person and online trainings. Throughout the year, Global
Citizen Corps Leaders organize Global Action Days to inform and inspire their
classmates to take action on poverty and related issues like hunger, HIV/AIDS,
climate change and access to education.

If you know high school students who
are ready to stand at the forefront of the fight for a better world, you can
help spread the word and build the movement.

Here's how:

  • Post the Global Citizen Corps announcement on your
website or in your newsletter and encourage students to apply.
  • Tell educators about the Global Citizen Corps
Leadership program and how they can promote it at their schools.
  • Tell students about the Global Citizen Corps
Leadership program and how they can get involved.

For more information on Global Citizen Corps please
visit
http://www.globalcitizencorps.org/.

To apply to be a Global Citizen Corps
Leader, go to:
http://www.globalcitizencorps.org/about.htm?page=about_apply.

Thank you for passing on the torch and helping
empower a new generation of globally-minded youth to fight global poverty.
Encourage high school students to apply to be a leader today!

all proposals and budgets are approved by the members.

Monday, February 9

7:00-9:00 PM

Multnomah Friends Meetinghouse

Hello all,

Here is the draft agenda from the Coordinating Committee for Monday's meeting. After several discussions in different groups, we are all worried about our capacity for the April activities, so felt that we needed to take a step back and evaluate the context of exactly what we are trying to accomplish in April. And after that we will be better able to make clear decisions by the end of the meeting about the specifics of the April event.

So, we have worked some discussion and strategizing into the meeting agenda we propose below. If anyone has any concerns or would like to propose a change to the agenda, please either respond to the Planning list, or email: coordinatingcommittee@lists.pdxpeace.org

Thanks, see you Monday!
