Start: 12:00 pm
On December 6th from 12-5pm Re:Mediation
will be hosting an event at Trillium Charter School to raise awareness
about the civilian costs of war on both sides of the conflict in the
Middle East. In addition to raising awareness, the group hopes to raise
funds for the purpose of alleviating some of the stresses caused by
this conflict. Proceeds will be used in the best ways possible, whether
that means providing our own direct help or in aiding other groups with
similar goals. The vision of this event is to create community
consciousness around how the world’s people are affected by war,
reaching across to both sides of the fence and collaborating and
educating on what we can do to help, while also accumulating funds to
reinforce the cause.
Throughout the evening there will be student power points, public
speakers, live music, traditional cuisine, dance performances and
African drumming. We are also encouraging open mic sessions so that
everyone has a chance to voice their ideas, opinions and thoughts.
Having open conversation and dealing with these topics on a community
level is key to our organization, and we invite all people to be apart
of this.
Child care will be available, and there will also be a recommended donation, though no one will be turned away.
Please contact us via phone or email if you have any questions or concerns.
The event is located at Trillium Charter School 5420 N Interstate Ave. 97217

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE We, having dutifully served our nation, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work, with others (a) Toward increasing public awareness of the costs of war. (b) To restrain our government from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations (c) To end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons (d) To seek justice for veterans and victims of war (e) To abolish war as an instrument of national policy. To achieve these goals, members of Veterans For Peace pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace. We urge all people who share this vision to join us.

9 am - 4 pm: Portland Winter Soldier
Winter Soldier was first held in 1971, when veterans of the Vietnam War gathered in Washington DC to testify about the atrocities they had committed or witnessed during the war. Now, Iraq Veterans Against the War have resurrected the tradition by holding a number of Winter Soldier events, including here in Portland on October 18. Veterans' testimonies, recorded in Portland in October, will be followed by a live forum with Iraq war vets and civilian victims of Occupation.

Does a quiet December loom with no prospect of hanging out with your family due to the rising costs of travel? Are you looking for ways to spread the warmth this season?
Join us for a letter writing bash! We will be gathering to write letters to Conscientious Objectors who are far from home and family this holiday season. Profiles of conscientious objectors will be available for you to review. Other opportunities to support resisters will also be presented, such as petitions and donation envelopes.
Your letters to them will boost morale and relieve some of the isolation and stress of their situation. Letters are a personalized and tangible form of support for those who refuse fire their weapons in Iraq or follow other illegal orders.
Child care, unfortunately, is not available but there is a play area just for children in R&B. If your child is interested, we would love to send artwork to our resisters!
Greeting Card Drive for the time-impaired!
There is also an option to participate in a greeting card drive – if you are unable to join us during this very busy time but still hold these resisters in your hearts, you can send greeting cards to these resisters. This month we plan to send "Happy Holidays" and "Happy New Year!" cards to our prisoners of conscience. Simply let anna know in your RSVP.
Call for material support in a material world:
We also welcome your gifts of handmade cards, postage, or other supplies. Mostly, though, we want you to join us! If you can't join this time, keep an eye out for future notices.
When: Sunday, 14 December 2008 1:00-3:00 pm
Where: Red and Black Café, 400 SE 12th Avenue, Portland

With:
RAINA ROSE
"If a bottle of champagne could sing, it would sound a lot like Raina Rose: positively effervescent and sparkling with youthful enthusiasm. She's a joy"
-- Tracy Grammer
"Portland native Raina Rose is everything a young female folksinger should be... From her late duo the Gypsy Moths to her latest and best-yet C, The Prophet, the Panhanldler and the Moon, her vocal, guitar and songwriting chops continue to flourish."
-- Jeff Rosenberg, Willamette Week
"Her music is joyful, buoyant, exhilarating, and radically silly. It's smart, grin-inducing artistry that's thankfully grounded in the real world."
-- D. R. Scott's Pulp Culture blog
MO MACK AND THE PEACEMAKERS
Portland folksinger and peace activist Mo Mack is joined by the Peacemakers, John and Cynthia Boelling, in some classic peace folk songs and original pieces. Expect smooth, three part harmonies, stylish guitar playing, and high quality tunes. They will be joined by Scott Bickford of Schwing Daddies on bass.
And special guests: THE SUMMER QUARTET
Four fabulous voices: John and Cynthia Boelling, Patrick Scofield, and Mel Downey. Yes, the four part blend is luscious, and they sing Bach, Beatles, madrigal, musical theater, and pop, but it's the fun and emotion that they sing with that makes them special. Yum!

After a year of blockades keeping vital medical supplies and aid from reaching Gaza, Israel has launched days of air raids against Gaza. Nearly 300 have died and several hundred more are wounded.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the operation "is liable to continue for some time, perhaps more than can be foreseen at the present time."
We need to send a message that the slaughter of civilians is unacceptable.
