Oregonians Remember Families Torn Apart By Immigration Raids

Oregon New Sanctuary Movement to hold a week of action and prayer for the families torn apart by Fresh Del Monte ICE Raids

Portland, Ore.--One year ago, the Fresh Del Monte Produce fruit and vegetable processing plant in North Portland was raided by agents from the  Department of Homeland Security Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). 167 immigrant workers were torn from their livelihood and their families.  Many were taken to a private prison near Tacoma and deported. A small number of women who were pregnant or had very young children were put under house arrest. One year later the families are still struggling to rebuild their lives.

From June 6th to 14th, the Oregon New Sanctuary Movement, Oregon immigration rights and labor groups, and immigrant families will take time to decry the injustices at Del Monte as well the ongoing assault against immigrant workers and their families through detentions, raids, and deportations.  We stand in solidarity with all immigrants as they fight for their human rights.

Last year, community leaders, elected officials, faith communities and community organizations came together to denounce the raids in a press conference at Fresh Del Monte in North Portland.  Portland Mayor Tom Potter at the time denounced such actions by The Department of Homeland Security saying that "Our nation would be better served if this kind of energy was focused on creating a comprehensive approach to immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship; addresses the immigration backlog that keeps families apart."

"Today, raids on immigrants continue across the country, separating little children from their parents and tearing apart families and communities", said Marco Mejia from the Oregon New Sanctuary Movement.  "As a nation, we need to decide if we truly value workers' rights, family unity, and the wellbeing of children."

Organizations co-sponsoring the week of events between June 6th and June 12th  include: Oregon New Sanctuary Movement, Augustana Lutheran Church, Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, Comite de Solidaridad y Apoyo Mutuo, Jobs with Justice, American Friends Service Committee, Portland Central America Solidarity Committee, Witness for Peace NW, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, Bridgeport UCC, Zion UCC, the Jobs with Justice Faith-Labor Committee, CAUSA, Ascension Catholic Church, Peace and Social Concerns Committee of the Multnomah Friends Meeting, the Social Justice Council of the First Unitarian Church, Justice Commission of Ainsworth UCC, and the Justice Witness Ministry Team of the Central Pacific Conference of the UCC.

The weekly peace march, open to all, is led and organized by a 13 year old and has been going strong for a year.  We meet at SE Taylor and 35 street (Sunnyside Environmental School playground).  (Note: no peace march on Sunday February 24,2008 due to PeaceJam at OSU that weekend)

In the words of the organizer: I am a politically active 13 years old, turning 14 February. I began organizing weekly peace marches protesting the Iraq war and have continued to organize them since January 28th 2007.   We have marched in the sun, in the pouring rain, in the wind and in hail.  Nothing will stop the us from telling every one we pass that there are people dying every day.  We have had up to 23 people on one march, and at least 300 honks.  Cars, fire trucks, buses and police cars have all honked (or sounded sirens) in support.

I have been trying to reach kids, like me, specifically because we need to make our voices heard.  We will inherit this country and the planet, along with its rich, and sometimes great, sometimes dreadful, history.  We can't let our international credibility be tarnished, dragged in the mud and ripped to shreds.  We need to stand up for our credibility, for our brave men and women in uniform shipped off to a country on the other side of the planet and for the Iraqi people who have been slaughtered in the name of "Democracy" and "Freedom."  If you would like to stand up and say "ENOUGH", if you would like to stand up for peace, then show up on Sundays.  We meet at 1:30 behind Sunnyside Environmental School, on 35th and Taylor.  The march goes on for about 45 minutes to an hour.

Start: 7:30 pm
End: 9:00 pm

WEEKLY THURSDAY IMPEACHMENT ACTION
Come join a group of people who have fun but bring the message to our representative that we do not want to see our children or grandchildren being drafted to service in Iraq in the year 2017.
Wednesdays and Thursdays
High noon @ 729 Oregon St.
We demand that all the Oregon Delegation now come out with a clear statement calling for the Impeachment of Dick Cheney and/or G.W. Bush.

We declare that we will not support or vote for any candidate who refuses to hold these two war criminals accountable for the illegal invasion, occupation and now genocide of the people of Iraq.

We have been patient, asked and now demand you do your job and bring these corrupt politicians to the bar of justice before they leave office.

This madness must stop, our troops are in great danger, and our people are now ashamed to call themselves Americans. The world is stunned by our lack of understanding what these monsters in the White House have and are doing.

Can't come to our protest on Thursdays at noon, 729 Oregon St.?  Here is what you can do:

Call your Representative and tell the person who answers the phone that you will no longer support him/her until they call for the investigation and impeachment of the Vice President and/or the President.

Center for Intercultural Organizing, a PDX Peace Member Group and one of the organizers of the Immigrants Rights Tent on March 15, is asking for some help from PDX Peace this month! At the end of the month they are having a benefit dinner to celebrate their fifth year. We have been asked to sponsor a table, which AFSC is sharing with us, which means we have to buy 5 seats to the dinner at $50 each. I have offered to be the table captain, so I'm urging those of you who are able to open your wallets for this very worthy organization.

CIO's announcement is copied below so you can see what a spectacular night you are being invited to attend, and you can reply to me at katie@pdxpeace.org if you are interested in purchasing one of PDX Peace's 5 seats. (you can buy tickets through the website, but please purchase through me, so that you can be part of the PDX Peace table).

Let's come together to say "Thank you" to one of our fantastic member groups

To focus Portland's attention  on U.S., Ethiopian military intervention.

Terry Shrunk Plaza, SW 3rd and Madison.

Portland area peace activists and Somali immigrants will rally on Monday, June
3
0 to call for peace in the war-torn nation. "End U.S. and Ethiopian Military Attacks on Somalia: Peace and Stability Can Stop Displacement and Genocide" is the theme of the rally, to be held Monday, June 30, from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Terry Schrunk Plaza at SW 3rd and Madison in downtown Portland. The main organizations behind the effort are the Center for Intercultural Organizing and Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group.

Prompting the rally were a series of bombings by U.S. military aircraft and submarines, the most recent of which killed 25 Somalis on May 1, threatening peace talks that had been planned among warring factions (1). The U.S. also bombed Somalia in March, 2008 (2) and January, 2007 (3). The U.S. airpower is supporting Ethiopian troops, which invaded Somalia in late 2006 purportedly to help stabilize the country, after fighting between an interim government's forces and various militia groups broke out. It is estimated that over 6000 Somalis have been killed in the conflict and over 1.5 million have become displaced from their homes (4).

The U.S. says they are targeting "terrorists," "Islamists" and fighters who are affiliated with the Council of Somali Islamic Courts and/or Al Qaeda, in theory making this part of the "War on Terror." The U.S. has also bombed Afghanistan, Pakistan, and a number of other countries since 2001 in the name of the "War on Terror."

Organizers are concerned that U.S. and Ethiopian military intervention is motivated by long-term military, political and economic goals such as housing "Africom"--the U.S. command in Africa (5), controlling the nearby Middle East (6), and drilling for known oil reserves (7).

Ethiopia's military has been accused of mass killings and various other atrocities such as rape, torture and looting, documented by Amnesty International in a May 2008 report (8).

Members of the local Somali community and their allies are calling for a peaceful protest to include speakers, music, and informational literature. Also cosponsoring the event are American Friends Service Committee, Code Pink Portland, PDX Peace Coalition and Portland Peaceful Response Coalition. Endorsers include the East Side Democratic Club and others.

For more information or to get involved contact the Center for Intercultural Organizing at 503-287-4117 or Peace and Justice Works at 503-236-3065.

H Con. Res. 362 is another gift from the Congress to Bush administration
giving him a tool to engage in a War with Iran.

Many anti-war organizations are joining forces in conducting an emergency call-in day for H.Con. Res. 362 – you’ve probably already gotten action alerts from us and others as well. We are doing a nation-wide call-in day tomorrow (Wed., July 9) and we need you to forward it to whoever you can and ask your network of contacts to place calls. This is a coordinated effort with several other grass-roots organizations participating. Our community should be directly involved and our voice must be heard.

David Wu is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the house, although not a sponsor he appears to be leaning to vote for it.
We need to call all OREGON representatives with regards to this war mongering attempt.

National Call-in Day on Iran Blockade Resolutions
Wednesday, July 9 is a national call-in day for H.Con.Res 362, the naval blockade resolution.

H.Con.Res.362 has over 220 cosponsors; is yours one?

Call your member of Congress and ask him or her not to support this act of war!

Congress is considering this bill at this very moment; now is the time to act to oppose this plan for war. Groups from all over the country are joining together for a national call-in day on H.Con.Res. 362.

This resolution demands that the president initiate an international effort to impose a land, sea, and air blockade on Iran to stop shipments of gasoline, and to subject all cargo entering or leaving Iran to stringent inspection requirements.

Call your representative and ask him or her to oppose the blockade resolution!

Imposing a blockade without United Nations authorization (which the resolution does not call for) would be considered an act of war. Though a vote on this bill has been successfully delayed so far, some Congressional sources say the House could vote on it as early as next week. They need to hear from you before the vote.

Adoption of this resolution would pave the way for war and bypass diplomacy. The immediate effect would be a further increase in oil prices - with gas prices in the US inching closer to $7/gallon and beyond.

Tell your member of Congress to oppose H CON RES 362 and join thousands of Americans in the rising chorus of concern over this dangerous legislation.

If your Representative is a co-sponsor: ask them to withdraw their sponsorship.

If your Representative is not a co-sponsor: thank them for not signing on and ask them to work to stop this dangerous legislation from going forward.

Call your representative today!
